Family activity

Start the tour from Barcelona in a comfortable coach to the municipality of Cardona. On this visit we offer you the opportunity to tour the modern fortress and parts of the old castle of Cardona, built in the year 886 by Wilfredo el Velloso; of Romanesque and Gothic styles, includes the so-called Sala Dorada and the Sala dels Entresols. Its jewel is the tower of the Minyona (11th century), 15 meters high and more than 10 meters in diameter, and the Romanesque church of San Vicente de Cardona.

During the fifteenth century, the Dukes of Cardona were the most important family of the Crown of Aragon, only behind the Royal House. The members of this ducal house were known as "kings without crowns", because they had extensive territorial domains in Catalonia, Aragon and Valencia, and dynastic links with the royal houses of Castile, Portugal, Sicily and Naples. In 1714, after a siege, which largely destroyed the castle walls, Cardona was the last stronghold to surrender to the Bourbon troops of Philip V during the War of Succession. His citadel could not be taken, until Napoleon's troops were overtook it.

After the visit to the castle, we will pass to a room where brunch will be served.
We will continue the visit to the mountain of Sal de Cardona. The mountain of Salt is a diapir that grows every year, occupying a depression of the terrain with elongated shape with an extension of land of 1,800 m in length by 600 in width and a surface of 100 hectares, with some natural characteristics that have fact worthy of being included in the Plan of Spaces of Natural Interest of Catalonia. The outcrops of salt are located within this depression, for what was formerly known as the Saline, and currently it is as Saline Valley.

After the closure of the mines, the tourist exploitation of the area began, creating the Salt Mountain Cultural Park, a cultural facility that opened in 2003 inside the Nieves Mine site. In it you can see the history of the industrial exploitation of the Valley. You can also see the mineral extraction machinery of the well, as it was when it was fully operational and you can visit the interior of the galleries of the Salt Mountain on a guided tour at 86 m depth.
We will then head towards the mountain of Montserrat, which reaches majestically the height of 4,051 feet (1,236 meters).
We will go up to Montserrat with the Zipper train which will drop you off at the Monastery. The train takes 15 minutes to climb while enjoying a privileged and beautiful view of the mountain. It is equipped with air conditioning, adapted for wheelchairs and equipped with panoramic windows that make the trip an interesting attraction.
The rocks of Montserrat are a natural sand cement that for centuries have been modified by wind and rain, which is why they have such a strange and varied shape. The popular imagination has seen human or animal forms in some of its peaks, giving them names and inventing legends to explain their fantastic origin. You can visit the Basilica of Montserrat, which houses the Romanesque carving of the twelfth century, the Verge Moreneta (the Black Madonna).

The Benedictine sanctuary of Montserrat was founded in 1025 and offers a mystical backdrop to the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. The small monastery soon began to receive pilgrims and visitors who have contributed to the dissemination of stories of miracles and wonders performed by the Virgin. Today, Montserrat has been modernized to continue serving the needs of pilgrims a thousand years after its foundation.

You will have free time to visit the audiovisual room where images of the history and creation of the monastery are projected. And you can also taste the typical liqueurs created by the monks of the monastery.
